Enterprise Management Associocates (EMA) recently posted a great blog on the growing popularity of Unified Communications (UC). The author, Shamus McGillicuddy, describes in detail the challemges that come with successfully deploying VoIP and Video-over-IP services.
Challenges related to how these new network-based applicaction services are provisioned onto all to often a busy corporate network. As much as we think that local networks have plenty of bandwidth, the devil is in the details.
Most corporate local and wide area network are very VoIP, UC and L
ync unfriendly. Unfriendly to the extend that existing business applications take up bandwidth and space on the corporate network. Unknowlingly these same apps can compromise a VoIP call conversation, creating the drops in a conversation, sudden delay in a response by the callee and even disconnects.
Shamus' blog on the EMA website highlights the good, the bad and the ugly in the process of planning and deploying UC.
